Male Pattern Hair Loss

What is male pattern hair loss, and how is it recognised?

Male pattern hair loss is also called androgenetic alopecia. It is a gradual change in susceptible hair follicles, influenced by inherited factors and androgens. Recognising a pattern helps a clinician assess it, but a photograph alone cannot confirm the cause.

Why the hair changes

Over repeated growth cycles, affected follicles can produce finer, shorter hairs. This process is called miniaturisation. The visible change is often at the temples, front or top of the scalp; it is different from simply finding a few loose hairs after washing.

How a clinician assesses the pattern

Describe when you first noticed changes, whether they are progressing and any family history. A clinician can examine the scalp and consider other explanations. A family history can be useful, but neither having nor lacking it proves the diagnosis.

What care can aim to do

There is no universal cure or guaranteed regrowth. The aim may be to slow progression or improve the appearance of coverage, depending on the person. Discuss options, risks, ongoing use and whether further examination is needed before choosing a routine.

A useful next step

  • Keep a short timeline rather than checking every day.
  • Take private photographs in consistent conditions if you want to discuss change.
  • Ask what diagnosis is most likely and what signs would lead to a different conclusion.

Put your own symptoms first

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis or individual prescription. Ask your GP or clinical team about changes that concern you, especially sudden loss, patches or scalp symptoms.
