A care option built around your assessment

The Capsule Plan is one of Volumize’s two care routes. It begins with a review of your hair loss and health, rather than an automatic prescription. Your clinician considers the likely cause, your medical history, current medicines and preferences before advising whether this route is appropriate.

An oral route may suit a person who prefers a capsule routine. Taking a medicine by mouth can have effects beyond the scalp, so the health and medicine review is an important part of the decision.

What your care includes

01

Clinical suitability

An assessment of your history and hair loss pattern. Further information or a GP review may be needed.

02

Individual instructions

If treatment is prescribed, your pharmacy supplies the exact formulation, dose, directions and patient information.

03

Ongoing support

Use the clinical portal for treatment questions and routine follow-up. Tell the team about changes to your health.

Discuss the routine before deciding

  • Tell the clinician about swallowing difficulties and your current medicines or supplements.
  • Ask about systemic risks, possible interactions and any monitoring needed.
  • Check what to do after a missed dose; do not assume a double dose is appropriate.
  • Read the specific information supplied with your prescription. Do not alter the dose, strength or formulation yourself.

An informed decision

Some hair loss uses or compounded formulations may be outside a medicine’s licence. The prescriber should explain this, the evidence, possible benefits, risks and alternatives before you choose. Suitability and the formulation are individual decisions.

Cost and commitment

The published six-month plan price is £19 per month equivalent: a base plan cost of £114 over six months. A monthly equivalent is a comparison figure, not a promise of monthly billing. Confirm the amount collected, delivery charges, any separate assessment fee and the renewal terms before paying.

Questions about this option

Can I choose this route without a review?

Your preference matters, but the clinician must first assess suitability. A prescription or this specific care route is not guaranteed.

Can I move from one plan to another?

Discuss the change with the clinical team. A different route may require an updated assessment; do not combine or switch medicines independently.

Is one route better for everyone?

No. The cause of hair loss, health considerations and your ability to follow the routine influence the choice.

What if I have a side effect?

Follow the supplied patient information and contact the clinical team. Use NHS 111 for urgent advice and 999 for an emergency.

The Volumize Promise

Detailed treatment information

The original website describes different ingredients and strengths in different sections. Your pharmacist will confirm the specific medicine, formulation and dose in your prescription. The examples below are not individual dosing instructions.

Does minoxidil + dutasteride regrow hair?

For many men, yes. Dutasteride has strong evidence for improving hair growth by lowering DHT, and minoxidil is widely used to support regrowth by helping the hair cycle. Responses vary by person and depend on consistent, longterm use.

How long does minoxidil + dutasteride take to work?

Most users begin to notice visible change after 3–6 months. Some need up to 12 months, and improvements can continue to build beyond a year (often up to ~24 months) with steady use. The treatment works only while you take it—if you stop, previously gained density generally reduces over several months as DHT rises again and growth support is removed. Consistency is key.

Possible side effects in men

This treatment is generally well tolerated, and many men experience no side effects. When they do occur, they're commonly mild and may improve during treatment, after a dose/formulation change, or on stopping. Potential effects can include: Erectile difficulties Reduced libido Changes in ejaculation (e.g., reduced semen volume) Breast tenderness, mood changes, or, in some cases, unwanted hair growth or swelling If you notice anything that concerns you—or you're unsure how to manage a symptom—contact the clinical team for advice.

Is oral minoxidil + dutasteride safe?

When prescribed appropriately and taken as directed, this combination can be used safely long term in suitable patients. Like all medicines, it isn't suitable for everyone; your prescriber will review your medical history, other medicines, and treatment goals to confirm if it's right for you.

What is minoxidil + dutasteride used for?

This oral combination is used to help manage male pattern hair loss. Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that lowers dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone linked to follicle miniaturisation, while minoxidil supports the hair growth cycle to help improve density. Prescribers may supply this combination off-label for hair loss following an assessment. At licensed doses, dutasteride is also used to treat enlarged prostate (BPH).

What are the strengths in this oral plan?

This oral plan offers two capsule options: Dutasteride 0.5mg + Minoxidil 2.5mg + Biotin 10mg, or Finasteride 1mg + Minoxidil 2.5mg + Biotin 10mg. Your prescriber will confirm which option is suitable for you based on your medical history, other medicines, and goals.

When's the best time to take the capsule?

There isn't a "best" time. Morning or evening is fine, with or without food. What matters is consistency—take it at roughly the same time each day.

Can I take it daily?

Yes—this oral plan is typically taken once daily. Always follow your prescriber's instructions; they may tailor the regimen to your needs.

Are Propecia and dutasteride the same?

No. Propecia® is a brand of finasteride, not dutasteride. Both medicines reduce DHT but are different active ingredients. Finasteride mainly inhibits type II 5-alpha-reductase; dutasteride inhibits type I and type II.

Can I buy oral minoxidil + dutasteride over the counter in the UK?

No. Oral minoxidil + dutasteride is supplied as a prescription-only treatment. You'll need a clinical assessment with a UK-registered prescriber (this can be done online via regulated services such as Volumize) before it can be supplied.

Can I get this treatment from my GP?

Oral combination treatment for hair loss is not usually available on the NHS. The NHS does prescribe some medicines for other licensed indications (for example, dutasteride for BPH), but typically not for hair loss. Most patients obtain hair-loss treatment privately through regulated online clinics like Volumize following an assessment.

How much does oral minoxidil + dutasteride cost in the UK?

Pricing varies by provider and plan. At Volumize, the advanced capsule plan is £13 per month on a 6-month plan and £17 per month on a 3-month plan.
