Causes of Hair Loss in Men

What other causes should be considered before assuming male pattern hair loss?

What other causes should be considered before assuming male pattern hair loss?

Hair loss in a man is not automatically male pattern hair loss. A clinician considers the pattern, speed of change, scalp symptoms and medical history. More than one cause can be present, so the assessment should explain why a particular diagnosis is likely.

Use the timing as a clue

Gradual patterned thinning suggests a different pathway from abrupt diffuse shedding. Illness, significant stress, weight loss or a change in health can be relevant to shedding. Describe the months before the change, not only the week when you noticed it.

Patchy loss and scalp symptoms matter

Alopecia areata can cause localised patches. Other scalp problems may cause redness, discomfort, scale or damaged hair. A medicine or supplement list also helps the clinician consider possible contributing factors. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Investigations should follow the history

Tests are not automatically required for every changing hairline. A GP may consider an examination or targeted tests where the history suggests another condition. Supplements should not substitute for identifying a suspected deficiency or a different diagnosis.

A useful next step

  • Describe whether the loss is diffuse, patterned or in distinct patches.
  • List scalp symptoms and any loss elsewhere on the body.
  • Bring a full medicine list and ask what alternative causes have been considered.

Put your own symptoms first

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis or individual prescription. Ask your GP or clinical team about changes that concern you, especially sudden loss, patches or scalp symptoms.
